Bachelor's Degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers majors and minors in French, German and Spanish as well as minors in Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Latin. Expand your knowledge of the world by learning another language (or more) by taking courses in grammar, conversation, literature, culture, linguistics, composition and more. Study abroad for a summer, semester or a year through one of our excellent departmental programs and not only will you earn credit toward your major or minor, you will gain the confidence and fluency that will make you stand out from the rest when it comes time to begin your career.

Combined B.A./M.A. program in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Earn a B.A. and an M.A. in only 5 years !

Illinois State University makes it possible for students to earn a B.A. and an M.A. in only 5 years. If you are an exceptional, non-teacher education student, you now have the opportunity to enter into the first program in Illinois that enables students to complete a B.A. and an M.A. in French or Spanish in only five years of study.

Master's Degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Through Illinois State University's Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures . . .

  • you can earn an MA DEGREE in just two years if you attend full time, or you can study part time at your own pace.
  • graduate courses meet in the late afternoon, evening, and sometimes on-line to accommodate in-service teachers and other professionals.
  • graduate assistantships, providing a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend are available, as well as other kids of financial assistance.
  • there is the option of achieving teacher certification while you complete your Masters, with only about one additional year of coursework.
  • you have the opportunity to take classes from experts in the fields of pedagogy, linguistics, culture, and literature, who have published extensively in their areas.
  • you can study abroad through departmental programs in Canada, France, Germany, Mexico and Spain.
